One-of-a-Kind 191 – Sculptural Dining Table with a Naturally Formed Material Composition
Collectible design made from a 3,700-year-old root formation
Unique Piece 191 was crafted from an Ancient Kauri burl slab that originally measured 280 × 210 cm and was transformed into a 280 × 100 cm sculptural dining table. The 8 cm-thick slab features embedded amber, preserved root sections, and an extraordinary internal structure that has developed within the wood over thousands of years.

Earth's History Preserved in Functional Art

A collector's item shaped by nature's topography
Root Islands, Amber Zones, and Cartographic Material Landscapes
The surface of the solid wood table resembles a natural landscape. Light-colored root-like formations are surrounded by dark amber and resin zones, creating a pattern reminiscent of archipelagos, coastlines, or geological maps.
Large, interconnected wooden structures appear to float within dark, deep zones, creating a spatial effect that only becomes fully apparent upon closer inspection.

Inner Worlds of Materials
Exposed root zones and deep zones
Many areas of the slab offer a deep view into the interior of the original root structure. Amber, resin, naturally formed cavities, and preserved root sections reveal the internal architecture of this millennia-old material.
In some places, individual root structures appear like exposed fragments of a hidden landscape. This creates a unique depth of material that was formed over very long periods of time in the Ancient Kauri.

Nature's Creative Power
Functional art made from organic material structures
The extraordinary effect of this dining table stems from the patterns of the wood grain, amber-colored areas, intergrown sections, and variations in the wood’s texture. Together, they create a visual language that is virtually impossible for humans to replicate or reproduce.
Many sections are reminiscent of aerial photographs, geological structures, or cartographic landscapes, giving the work its unique place somewhere between a sculptural collector's item, functional art, and exclusive collectible design.

Workflow
From Its Origins to a Unique Collectible Piece of Furniture
The original root slab, measuring 280 × 210 cm, already exhibited the open root cavities, amber zones, and internal structures that would later come to define the work. The studio photographs document this state and reveal how the material landscape that would later emerge was already present in the original formation.
Certificate of Age & Provenance
A collector's item with 3,700 years of material history
A material sample from Unikat 191 was analyzed at the Leibniz Laboratory for Age Determination and Isotope Research at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel. The dating results indicate that the ancient kauri wood used is approximately 3,700 years old.
The scientifically documented origin remains part of the work's provenance and makes it possible to trace the historical depth of the material.

Spatial Context
Sculptural dining table for exclusive architectural living spaces
With its elongated shape and distinctive grain pattern, the Kauri table serves both as a sculptural dining table and as an architectural collector’s piece. The light-colored root sections and dark, deep zones particularly come into their own in minimalist living spaces, libraries, private collections, or exclusive gallery interiors.
In the context of the international collectibles market, the piece falls somewhere between a collectible dining table, a sculptural table, and functional art.

Unique Item No. 191
A documented, one-of-a-kind specimen of an extraordinary root formation
This one-of-a-kind piece showcases an extraordinary ancient kauri root formation featuring embedded amber, open root cavities, and naturally evocative imagery. The combination of scientifically dated origins, a naturally formed material landscape, and artisanal craftsmanship makes this work a distinct chapter in Beaupoil’s oeuvre.
The work is now part of the Beaupoil Archive.
